“A signed label in the artist’s writing on the back of the painting reads: ‘Napoleon crossed to the Island of Lobau by Vienna on the morning of the 21st May. Battle of Essling. (This bridge was several times destroyed by the Austrians & rebuilt again & again stronger & larger. It was the key to the position.) Campaign in Austria 1809. Napoleon said, “Voila une magnifique salle de ball [sic]”!’”
